How to Open Your Pool for the Season: A Step-by-Step Guide

Stacey Owens

As the weather warms up, it's time to prepare your pool for another season of fun and relaxation. Properly opening your pool ensures clean, clear water and reduces maintenance headaches throughout the summer. Follow this detailed guide to get your pool ready for the season.

Step 1: Remove and Store Your Pool Cover

Skip this step if you have a brand-new pool.

If your pool has been covered over the winter, start by removing the pool cover. Be sure to drain off any accumulated water before lifting it off. Leaving water on the cover can cause it to spill into the pool, introducing dirt and debris.

Once removed, clean the cover thoroughly using BioGuard Stow-Away to prevent mold, mildew, and odors. After cleaning, allow the cover to dry completely before folding and storing it in a dry, debris-free place, away from direct sunlight and harsh weather conditions.

Step 2: Fill Your Pool to the Proper Level

Before starting the circulation system, ensure your pool is filled to the correct level. The water should reach the middle of the skimmer opening. This allows proper water circulation and prevents air from entering the filtration system, which could cause potential damage.

Step 3: Inspect Your Pump, Skimmer Basket, and Filter

With the pool filled, it's time to check essential equipment:

  • Pump: Ensure your pump is operating correctly by priming it and checking for leaks or unusual noises.
  • Skimmer Basket: Remove any debris that may have collected over the winter to ensure proper water flow.
  • Filter: Depending on your filter type (sand, cartridge, or DE), clean or replace it as necessary. A well-functioning filter is essential for keeping your pool water clear and free of contaminants.

Once your system is running smoothly, add BioGuard Pool Complete® 911 to help break down any buildup and restore water clarity.

Step 4: Get Your Water Tested

Your pool’s water chemistry needs to be balanced for safe and comfortable swimming. Before taking a water sample, let the pool circulate for 24 to 48 hours to ensure a well-mixed sample.

Below is a Guide for Approximate Levels for your Pool:

  • Free Chlorine residual: 1.0 to 4.0 ppm
  • Total Bromine residual: 1.0 to 4.0 ppm
  • pH level: Ideal range is 7.4 to 7.6 (acceptable range: 7.2 to 7.6)
  • Total Alkalinity: 125 to 150 ppm (80 to 150 ppm for saltwater pools)
  • Calcium Hardness:
  • Plaster and SoftSwim pools: 200 to 275 ppm
  • All other pool types: 175 to 225 ppm

If any levels are off, adjust them using the appropriate products to prevent algae growth, cloudy water, or scaling.

Step 5: Establish a Routine Maintenance Plan

Regular maintenance is the key to keeping your pool in top condition all season long. Companies like BioGuard offers several easy-to-use pool care systems like the BioGuard 3-Step Care System, SoftSwim and Mineral Springs.

A routine pool maintenance plan should include regularly testing and balancing water chemistry, emptying skimmer baskets, skimming the surface, vacuuming the pool, brushing the walls and floor, checking and backwashing the filter as needed, inspecting pool equipment for damage, and performing periodic deep cleaning. Additionally, ensuring proper water circulation is essential to maintaining a clean and safe swimming environment.
