How to Purge Your Hot Tub with Ahh-Some: A Step-by-Step Guide for a Fresh, Clean Soak

Stacey Owens

Even with regular cleaning and chemical treatments, hot tubs can develop biofilm—a buildup of bacteria, oils, and residues—that hides in plumbing lines and jets, affecting water quality and system performance. To tackle this buildup effectively, a thorough “purge” is needed, and Ahh-some is one of the most trusted products for the job.

Follow this guide to learn how to purge your hot tub using Ahh-some and enjoy crystal-clear water and a healthier hot tub experience.

What is Ahh-some and Why Use It?

Ahh-some is a powerful, eco-friendly gel designed specifically for purging hot tubs, swim spas, and jetted tubs. It breaks down biofilm and removes contaminants from areas that regular cleaning and sanitizers can’t reach. By purging with Ahh-some every 6-12 months, you can extend the lifespan of your hot tub and ensure consistently clear, odor-free water.

1. Gather Your Supplies

To get started, you’ll need:

   - Ahh-some Hot Tub & Jetted Bath Plumbing Jet Cleaner (check the label for dosage specific to your hot tub size)

   - Clean, soft cloth or sponge

   - Hot tub test strips

2. Raise the Water Level in Your Hot Tub

Make sure your hot tub is filled to its normal operating level or slightly above. This ensures that Ahh-some reaches all the plumbing lines, jets, and filters effectively.

3. Remove the Filter(s)

Remove the filter cartridges, since Ahh-some will cause residue buildup that could clog your filter. You can clean the filters separately during the purge process. With an appropriate filter cleaner.

4. Add the Ahh-some Gel

Consult the Ahh-some label for the correct amount to add based on your hot tub’s gallon capacity. Usually, a small amount—around a teaspoon per 100 gallons—is sufficient.

   - Tip: You can pre-mix Ahh-some with a small amount of warm water in a bucket to dissolve it before adding it directly to the tub.

5. Run the Jets and Circulate the Water

Turn on the jets at full power to circulate the water. Ahh-some will immediately begin to break down biofilm, dirt, and oils, which will cause foaming on the water’s surface. This foam is normal and indicates that the product is doing its job.

   - Run for 15-30 Minutes: Allow the jets to run for 15-30 minutes to ensure all pipes, jets, and plumbing are thoroughly cleaned.

Ahh-some is a powerful, eco-friendly gel designed specifically for purging hot tubs, swim spas, and jetted tubs.

6. Observe the Foam and Debris

As Ahh-some works, you’ll likely notice gunk and residue appearing in the foam. This is biofilm and contaminants being purged from the plumbing. If the foam is especially dirty, consider extending the purge time to ensure complete cleaning.

7. Drain and Wipe Down the Hot Tub

After running the jets for the recommended time, turn off the jets, turn off your breaker to your hot tub and drain the hot tub completely. Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down any residue that may have stuck to the sides or seats. This step helps remove lingering contaminants and ensures your tub is as clean as possible.

8. Clean the Filters Separately

While your hot tub is draining, take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the filter cartridges. Rinse them with a hose or soak them in a filter-cleaning solution before reinstalling them.

9. Refill and Balance Your Hot Tub

Once the tub is drained and wiped down, refill it with fresh water. Test the water and adjust the pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels as needed. This ensures that your hot tub is ready for safe and comfortable use.

10. Enjoy a Fresher, Cleaner Soak!

With the purge complete, your hot tub is now free of biofilm, residue, and debris. Ahh-some’s deep-cleaning action will not only improve water quality but also enhance the efficiency of your sanitizer, making it easier to maintain clean, clear water for months to come.

Why Routine Purging Matters

Regular purging every 6-12 months with Ahh-some helps prevent biofilm buildup, reduce strain on your filtration system, and ensure consistently fresh water. This extra step in hot tub maintenance is worth the time for anyone who wants an ideal soak experience and an extended life for their tub.
